Ironmongery

This past January, I was at the OR Show walking media through Black Diamond’s new line for Winter ’09. One of the highlights was the new BD stainless-steel crampons – the Cyborg, Sabretooth and Serac. The advantages of stainless over chro-moly are numerous – significant weight savings, durability, no rust, less snow balling and bad-ass look. Through exhaustive research BD was able to offset the quandary of higher expense versus performance gain and in the end has a product that will be priced right while raising the competitive standard.

The Cyborg and Sabretooth particularly drew ohhs and ahhs from core ice climbers, design mag editors and business writers alike. With spring mountaineering season upon us, I was looking forward on getting out on a pair of protos until I got an email from my friend Jon about a new crampon he stumbled upon in Parker, CO. Turns out the guys who were testing his new diesel for emissions have been doing some R&D work themselves. rumor has it they may sell these designs to one of BD’s competitors… Check it out!

Boa President Mark Soderberg Scores A Double Win at Mountain States Cup Opening Weekend

Boa Technology President Mark Soderberg barely escaped a monstrous spring snowstorm in time to arrive at the opening weekend of the annual Mountain States Cup mountain bike races in Fruita, Colorado. “It was amazing to have three feet of snow on the Front Range and be racing in sunshine and 70 degrees just four hours away,” says Soderberg.

It’s a good thing that Soderberg, a Category 1 mountain biker, made the trip (although his competition might not feel the same), because he came away with two wins in the 50+ age category.

In Saturday’s cross-country time trial, Soderberg edged second-place rider Hal Butler by 3.55 seconds. He covered the course in 19:33, a 10-second improvement from the previous year. Says Soderberg, “The time trial was a blast—great tight single track with a few fun rock obstacles and a finish with some roller coasters.”

In Sunday’s Big Event, the Shimano XTR Cross Country, Soderberg enjoyed a more comfortable winning margin, outpacing Butler by 2:06 – although it was not a ride in the park. Soderberg and Butler battled for most of the race.

“Racing was super fast average speed with tons of passing and close racing,” says Soderberg, who eventually pulled away. “I managed the win mostly because my two closest competitors had some mechanical issues late in the race allowing me to sneak out a win.”

In the end, Soderberg registered a time of 2:19:01 over the 27.5-mile course (described by him as “painfully long”).

One Tall Drink of Water

0310_largeIn the world of PR, it doesn’t get much better than a cool celeb becoming a fan of your clients gear. The only way that gets better is if the celeb promoting your gear is all 6ft 9 good lookin’ inches of UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough.

Throughout the past few months, I have been proud to see Tyler carrying his Klean Kanteen to all the games in the NCAA tournament. This week he took home the championship, and in this interview for ACC’s Court Vision, he explains why it’s his bottle of choice.

Thanks Tyler. And if you need some more bottles for the NBA, (or a tour guide in Jackson Hole) gimme a shout.

Today’s Fabrics – Tomorrow’s Environment

_ger518112March 19, 2009 – Polartec hosted a media event at The Loft and Garden in Rockefeller Center, New York City to celebrate their new collection of environmentally friendly fabrics. Fall 2009 garments from the best performance clothing brands in the world were on display to highlight the range of recycled content Polartec fabrics now available including super lightweight 100% recycled content Polartec Power Dry to super warm Polartec Classic 300 with 87% recycled content.

Andy Vecchione, President of Polartec, LLC, kicked off the evening by discussing Polartec’s long-term commitment to sustainability. Polartec first offered recycled fleece over 15 years ago and in 2009 almost 30 percent of Polartec’s total production will be recycled fabric – saving at least 38 million pounds of CO2 annually.

Andy then passed the mic to newly minted author, Aspen local and old friend, Auden Schendler. Auden, who works as the environmental director for the Aspen Ski Co, just published his first book Getting Green Done, a fascinating look from the front lines of the sustainability movement. Auden began his talk by comparing his Harris Tweed jacket to Polartec and had the crowd engaged and laughing from start to finish.
